Archiving our adventures.

About

Ways We Travel is a site about the places we’ve travelled, how we saw them, and what we did there at specific moments in time. It was started by us, Abbie Schenk and Elaine Yip, to document the many ways we’ve travelled since 2008 via post-trip reports, photography, poetry, and other writings on the broader topic of travel.

Ways We Travel is a bit different from a standard travel blog: articles might be about places we went years ago, not just the latest trend. We don’t necessarily give advice or recommendations since a place we went to a week ago might not be the same today, as we’ve encountered personally. We might write too much instead of too little but that’s one of the great affordances of the World Wide Web.

We hope you enjoy reading, viewing, and thinking with us as you look through the articles on this site and think about the ways you too have travelled. If something speaks to you, please feel free to get in contact by @ing us on Bluesky, commenting on Instagram, subscribing on YouTube, following us via RSS, or emailing us at check-in@wayswe.travel. Maybe someday we’ll start a Discord (or a forum) but not yet.

Colophon

We usually write our articles in Obsidian as Markdown. The images are generally only edited in Capture One.

Despite what the em dashes may lead you to believe, we do not use AI or LLM tools to help us write the articles. We also do not use AI for image generation or editing, and adhere to journalistic standards of photo-editing. We have used GitHub Copilot during web development in the past, and might ask ChatGPT some questions to help unblock our thinking.

The Ways We Travel website is built with Astro, using TypeScript and Tailwinds. It is deployed as a static site via Cloudflare Pages. The spinning globe logo is built with Three.js. We use the Lora serif and Inter sans-serif fonts.

This site is not currently monetized, and we don’t have any tracking outside of opt-in third-party embeds like YouTube. Privacy information is available in the Privacy Policy.
